Period after which the commercial exploitation of a publication ends and it becomes freely accessible to any internet user. Its duration depends on the specific journal, economic model, and discipline, but generally ranges from 1 to 3 years.
The full text of articles over 3 years old (on average—this duration varies by journal) is freely accessible, while access to more recent issues is usually conditional on each publisher’s choices, via either:
- the sale of subscriptions and issues; or
- the sale of individual articles.
Subscribers to the print version of a journal distributed by Cairn typically have access to the full text of its issues on Cairn.info.
