Publishing production
The publishing production department is responsible for the preparation, typesetting, and proofreading of publications distributed on Cairn.info. It also manages the printing and mailing of print issues, including print-on-demand services.
Mixed distribution
At Cairn.info, each stage of the production chain is oriented toward mixed distribution: publications are carefully planned with both printed and electronic formats in mind. In addition to graphic and typographic aspects of composition and layout, semantic structuring and adherence to various digital publishing standards must be taken into account.

This meticulous approach currently applies to around a hundred journals, originating from 40 different publishers, whose issues we produce.
Sales
Journals distributed on Cairn.info often offer users the option to purchase issues in a mixed format: print and digital. The user enters their delivery address and pays online for the journal and shipping fees as established by the publisher. The order is then immediately forwarded to the publisher, who handles the shipment.
Print-on-demand
For journals for which Cairn.info manages a print-on-demand (POD) service, the print version is produced upon receipt of the order and sent directly to the buyer by the printing company. Cairn.info works closely with several printing houses (including SoBook) and journal distributors to transmit orders in real time. The print-on-demand experience is thus seamless for the buyer, who receives their issue unaware that it was printed specifically for them.

Early Access Articles
Digital distribution does not have to adhere to the publication schedules dictated by print publishing. Journals increasingly opt for Early Access Articles to enable online distribution of an author's work prior to the official release date of the issue in which it is due to appear. Cairn.info has adapted its publishing methods to support this trend.
Layout
As in word processing, where a paragraph can be automatically formatted by applying a style that specifies all its typographic characteristics, Cairn.info uses Typefi automation software to streamline the layout phase. This software compiles formatting requirements—for the placement of tables and images, or headers and footers, for instance—into styles and templates defined during the typesetting stage.
Typefi thus enables us to produce content in different formats (INDD, PDF, and XML Erudit Article) from the same source (DOCX).
